Araucana

Araucana hens are quite charming, with their unique and cute hairstyles and fluffy beards under their chins. Known for their calm and docile nature, they are friendly and get along well with other breeds. While they can fly, they aren’t particularly flighty.

Good with most

This breed generally gets along well with most others, but some more delicate breeds may not mix well with hybrids or more aggressive types.

Aloof but friendly

This breed is naturally curious and friendly, though they may come across as a bit aloof since they prefer not to be handled too much. They are independent and content to go about their own activities.

150-200 Medium Cream PA

This breed can lay up to 200 medium-sized spearmint blue eggs annually and is not typically known for being very broody.

Character

Typically gentle and friendly chickens, smaller in size compared to larger hybrids, with a more laid-back temperament. While they may not be the most affectionate hens, their curious nature makes them excellent companions and wonderful garden pets. They are non-aggressive and blend well in mixed flocks, whether with larger or smaller breeds. However, they can be bullied if kept with overly aggressive chickens.

Sutability

These delightful mid-sized birds are perfect for a backyard or smaller setup, as they don’t require much space and are content in a run. However, they are also confident and happy when free-ranging. Known for their intelligence and curiosity, they enjoy being in pairs with other breeds that share their foraging and exploring instincts. While they can coexist with hybrid flocks, it's best to have a larger number of Ameraucanas than hybrids, and they also do well with smaller bantams. They love to perch and roost, so providing enrichment in the run is important if they’re confined for long periods. Since they can fly, they require a secure enclosure when unsupervised, and they’re also capable of using a ladder or ramp to access their house.

History

The Araucana chicken was developed in the United States in the 1970s, originating from Araucanas brought over from Chile. The breed was specifically created to preserve the unique blue egg-laying gene of the Araucana while eliminating its tufted and rumpled traits. Ameraucanas are fairly common in the U.K. and are reliable egg layers, producing up to 200 blue or spearmint-colored eggs annually. They have an average lifespan of up to 8 years.
