Copper Black/Black Marrans

Marans are striking, large utility hens with a majestic appearance. Known for their docile nature, they lay beautiful dark brown eggs. These birds have lightly feathered legs and come in various colors, with the Copper Black being the most popular. Despite their size, they are surprisingly friendly.

Good with most

This breed will be suited with most other breeds, however, some delicate breeds are not compatible with Hybrids or more aggressive breeds.

Aloof but friendly

This breed is naturally curious and friendly, though they may appear a bit aloof as they don’t enjoy being handled too much. Independent by nature, they prefer to go about their own activities and "chicken" around.

150-200 Medium/Large Chocolate PA

This breed will lay up to 200 medium to large dark brown chocolate-coloured eggs per year, they are not known for being broody.

Character

Marans are typically docile and friendly chickens. Although they are a large breed, they have a calm temperament. They are capable fliers and enjoy roosting and perching. Well-suited for free-range environments, they can also adapt to confinement as long as there is ample space and enrichment. Known for their non-aggressive nature, they integrate well into mixed flocks with both larger and smaller chickens. However, caution should be taken when mixing them with more delicate bantams.

Sutability

French Marans are a striking breed, known for being excellent purebred layers and making wonderful additions to a mixed flock. They thrive both individually and within a flock and don’t necessarily require a breed companion. These hens enjoy foraging and free-roaming, so they might not be the best fit for a small backyard. However, they can adapt to smaller setups as long as they have plenty of enrichment. Docile and friendly with most other breeds, they’re not overly fond of being handled, but with patience and treats, they can be hand-tamed. They can easily manage a house with a ladder or ramp and love to roost, so they’ll appreciate having some roosting bars to sleep on at night.

History

The Marans breed originated in the town of Marans, in the Charente-Maritime region of France, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Initially, they were valued for both egg production and meat, particularly for their rich, dark brown eggs. The Black Copper Marans is the most common and well-developed variety in France, known for producing the best egg color. They are good layers, offering up to 200 medium-sized eggs per year, and have a life expectancy of up to 8 years.
