The Purebred Leghorn is a delightful bird with a sweet, docile, and friendly nature. While they can be a bit flighty at first, they become easily hand-tamed once they gain confidence and get to know you. These chickens are social and will quickly start following you around the garden out of curiosity. As they mature, their combs grow large and floppy, adding a comical touch that highlights their quirky personalities. They make a fantastic all-around chicken, perfect for first-time poultry keepers.
Leghorns are highly adaptable and thrive in a variety of environments. They prefer setups with plenty of foraging opportunities, as they enjoy being out and about. They can also do well in a backyard setup, as long as their run is enriched or they have ample free garden time with you around. They integrate easily into mixed flocks and are calm and friendly with other breeds—ours have even been raised alongside delicate Polish chickens. Since they can fly, they require a secure enclosure when unsupervised. They can also navigate a house with a ladder or ramp and enjoy perching, so roosting bars are ideal for them. It's important to ensure prolific layers receive proper care, including supplements like multivitamins, calcium tonic, and high-quality layer feed.
Leghorns originated in Tuscany, central Italy, and were first exported to North America in 1828 from the port city of Livorno. In 1870, the breed was introduced to Britain from the United States and later re-exported back to Italy. Today, white Leghorn chickens are widely recognized and commercially used as prolific layer birds in many countries around the world. Known for their impressive egg production, they can lay up to 300 large white eggs per year. Due to their high egg yield, Leghorns typically have a shorter lifespan of around 6 years.
