Rhode Island Red
Rhode Island Red chickens, affectionately known as "Rhodies," have long been a favorite among poultry lovers for their striking appearance, reliable egg-laying, and friendly nature. With their deep, rich red plumage, they stand out in any flock, while their unique rose combs add to their charm.
Good with most
This breed will be suited with most other breeds, however, some delicate breeds are not compatible with Hybrids or more aggressive breeds.
Aloof but friendly
This breed is typically flighty and fast moving and will become to be friendly, but they may come across as a bit aloof since they don’t enjoy being handled too much. They tend to be independent and prefer to do their own thing.
250-300+ Large Cream/Light Brown PA
This breed can lay up to 300 large cream to light brown coloured eggs per year, they are not known for being broody.
Character
Rhode Islands are classed as a heavy breed, but are active. They enjoy foraging on grass. They are bright and alert but at the same time quiet. They make great pets and are relatively hardy. They will produce a large amount of brown eggs a year. Rhode Island Reds love to investigate new things and are inquisitive to the point of being nosey.
They are friendly hens and fairly docile with other birds of a similar disposition – however they are usually mid to higher level in the pecking order.
Reds from the production strain are prolific layers. They will produce 5-6 eggs per week, which equates to around 250-300 eggs per year. Rhode Island Red eggs are medium to large and are light brown in colour.
History
The Rhode Island Red, originally developed in the 1890s in the U.S. state of Rhode Island, is a true classic! This breed was created by crossing a mix of other chickens, including Buff Cochins, Langshans, Black Red Malay, Hamburgs, and Rose-combed Leghorns. The result was a versatile bird known for its ability to produce both meat and eggs, meeting the growing demand of the American population at the time. Arriving in the UK in 1903, the Rhode Island Red quickly gained popularity and is now one of the most recognizable breeds worldwide. In fact, when crossed with a Sussex, the Rhode Island Red forms the foundation of many of today’s hybrid breeds.
