The Faverolles is a French breed originally developed as a large utility hen for egg and meat production. It was created in the 1860s in the region of north-central France, near the villages of Houdan and Faverolles, with the breed named after the latter village. The singular form of the name is Faverolles (not Faverolle), with the final "s" being silent in French. Nowadays, this breed is rare and primarily raised for exhibition and novelty. Faverolles are medium to large chickens known for their distinctive beard muffs, feathered legs and feet, and a fifth toe. Males typically have straw-colored plumage with reddish-brown and black markings. They make excellent winter and early-season layers, producing up to 200 medium-sized cream or pink eggs per year. While not overly broody, they can occasionally go broody. Faverolles have a life expectancy of 8 to 10 years.
