Sable Poots

We absolutely adore these charming little bantams! Sablepoots are incredibly pretty birds, with beautiful feathering on their legs and feet that give them the appearance of wearing feathered booties. They have sweet, gentle temperaments and come in a variety of colors. Perfect for backyard setups.

Good with most

This breed generally gets along well with most others, but delicate breeds may not be compatible with hybrids or more aggressive types.

Make great pets

This breed makes excellent pets for both adults and children, known for their gentle nature and ease of handling. They enjoy human interaction and are happy to keep you company.

100-150 Small White PA

This breed will lay up to 150 small white coloured eggs per year, they are not known for being overly broody.

Character

The Booted Bantam, also known as the Sablepoot Bantam, is a charming and friendly small chicken breed. With their gentle temperament, they make excellent pets, especially for children. While they aren't as sturdy as breeds like the Wyandotte or Pekin when it comes to handling, they are still quite hardy and resilient. These birds are curious and entertaining, though they may be a bit shy around large groups or unfamiliar people. They are easy to tame, and once they are, they'll happily become a part of the family, enjoying cuddles and attention. Calm and laid-back, they’re among the most easygoing chickens—much like their larger cousins, the friendly Cochins. They’ll enjoy spending time with you in the garden without damaging your lawn or flower beds.

Suitability

Booted Bantam hens are perfect for smaller spaces. Due to their fully feathered feet and legs, they’re not ideal for large, free-range environments. Instead, they thrive in well-maintained lawns or paved/gravel areas. With their calm and easygoing nature, they tend to get along well with other breeds. However, be mindful of any bully birds, as they’re not the type to start a fight but can easily be picked on if kept with aggressive birds. Similar to Polish Bantams, they should always be kept in pairs and never with large hybrid breeds. They do well with gentle, larger pure breeds like Cochins or Brahmas. They’re also fine in a house with a mild ramp for easy access.

History

Sablepoot Chickens, also known as Booted Bantams, originated in the Netherlands. Historical records show that these bantams were being bred there as early as the 16th century, making them one of Europe's oldest chicken breeds. They’re called "Booted Bantams" because of their distinctive leg and feet feathering, which creates the appearance of them wearing trousers and booties. Today, they are primarily bred in the UK for show and as pets. While they are decent layers, they are not typically kept for their utility. These charming birds come in over 11 different color variations, including lemon millefleur and lavender. They can lay up to 150 small white eggs a year and have a life expectancy of up to 10 years.
