Sumatra

The Sumatra chicken is a striking and elegant breed, known for its long, flowing curves, abundant tail feathers, and a stunning green sheen. Native to the islands of Sumatra, Java, and Borneo in Indonesia, these birds originally lived in the wild and are believed to have influenced the development of many other breeds.

Behaviour

Originally known as Sumatra Game, due to their jungle fowl ancestry, Sumatras are known for being a flighty and excellent flying breed. Because of this, their free-ranging area needs to be particularly secure, ideally with a roof or netting to prevent escapes. They can become quite tame with regular handling and can be kept in a mixed flock, though they require a large, spacious free range, as they can be somewhat territorial. Sumatras do need more attention than other breeds, especially because of their long tail feathers. Perches should be set higher to accommodate their tails. The hens lay small, cream-colored eggs, though not in large quantities. They are fantastic mothers and make excellent brooders, sometimes even used to hatch out waterfowl.

History

The Sumatra is a native breed from the island of Sumatra. In the 1800s, they were brought to Europe for use in cockfighting, as both males and females have naturally small wattles and combs, which reduced the risk of injury during fights. Today, they are primarily kept for showing, admired for their striking beetle-black plumage. Both males and females sport long, pheasant-like tail feathers, with the males’ saddle feathers often almost reaching the ground. A miniature version of the breed is also available.
